Great bit of survival gear. Little bit smaller than I had imagined

Put together nicely

Makes a shower of sparks. Great quality. Just remember to scuff off the bluing on the rod before it works correctly.

Edited – after a lot more use I have edited this and reduced my rating from great to good. The rod is softer composition which is good to get a lot of material off it when using it, and making the strikes far more effective with a lot more material in each scrape. But there is definitely a knack to getting a great spark spread with this rod. A slower scrape removes material well but won’t spark well. You need to strike hard and fast and then you get a good spark spread.
I did find however that the burr edge on the striker was not as sharp as it should and ought to be. I would rate the striker I received as ineffective.
When i use an effective striker from another ferro rod or the back spine of my carbon blade, each of which do have good burrs on them, i get a much deeper scrape on each strike and much much better spark shed and particle spray. I think this might be why some find the rod doesnt work as well as it should and could, combined with the need
For a hard pressure fast strike. I’ve reduced
my overall rating to good.

This fire starter is good enough to start a fire. Works well but not as good as the real ones they sell at the outdoors store for 50 bucks.

Went on a hiking trip a backup ignition source in case the main one failed… and guess what? The main ignition source failed!
Took this striker and voila! Fire.
Will it last 1200 strikes? I am not counting. Is it the best one? I am not an expert in the field. But I can say:
It is cheap, nicely build AND DID THE JOB.

Well worth the effort to order this. A good size fire starter, could come in useful when I’m camping.
Good design and packaging. Arrived quickly!

Works just as great as any high priced fire steel and the striker works just as good, throws sparks far and hot, definitely a good buy
Jacqui –
Works great at starting fires

It’s fine for a ferro rod, but it’s not as easy as it looks. If you want a hobby, then take up starting fires with this. If you want an easy, quick and reliable way to start fires in an emergency, pack matches or a lighter.
